8 Things to do in Yosemite Valley in the Winter

Yosemite Valley is one of the top destinations in California and easily one of the most beautiful places in the state. While most people choose to visit in the summer, it is incredibly busy, and a winter visit to the valley is one of the best ways to experience the park. Here are some of my favorite winter stops in the Yosemite Valley.

We went to Yosemite last month and the views are so breathtaking. We didn’t get to the glacier point because of closure but hope to come back to see Yosemite summer view someday.

Hi 🙂 planning on visiting end of feb. is it possible to see all these?

  6. David Carter on March 8, 2020 at 11:55 am

Very well done, FWIW. I’ve been ten times (over the span of 50 years), but never in the winter. That’ll be next, thanks to your video. I was there with my son in early November back in the late 1990’s, and there already was snow up high – but we were still able to hike to Vernal and Nevada Falls (Yosemite Falls trail was closed then) – although it was very slippery at the top. … probably days/hours from shutting it down too.

Yosemite is easily my family’s favorite national park – and we live within two hours of Mt. Rainier N.P. (which is a GREAT N.P. – but nothing matches Yosemite in our books).

The is my favorite place. Many years ago my youngest daughter and I took our horses and rode part of the John Muir Trail. It was amazing. And on the same trip we rode part of the John Muir Trail in the Mammoth area. Sad, many of the trees were dying in the mammoth area due to the volcanic gases.

When does it typically begin to get snowy in Yosemite?

  16. TruthOrClaire on March 8, 2020 at 12:08 pm

Beautiful video! When was it filmed? My fiancé is convinced that we’re in the footage at 1:39 at the chapel when we were there last February to watch the Firefall. 😆

My favorite time in Yosemite is the winter….since there is no one there! If you go in Feb the last two weeks you can see “fire falls” (if conditions are right)!

Another awesome CTML video showcasing the beauty of California! I’ve wanted to make the trip up there from here in Long Beach for a while now, just haven’t been able to make it happen. Was gonna go last year and then the whole place started burning up! I have to hike half dome, and also, after seeing the clip at 2:50, got to go to the top of Yosemite Falls, that’s a wild view. Any advice for a group of broke college/high school students trying to spend at least a few days up there?

  29. R. knudson on March 8, 2020 at 12:18 pm

Thank you. My late father was a native Californian and told us how as a kid he could see Half Dome from the family yard. He was so very proud of that & being a native Californian.

I am visiting San Francisco in the first week of Feb and thinking to visit Yosemite Park for the first time. Would it be better to use public transport and go to the park and use their shuttle system? or If I am driving, do I need tire chains for it?
