Backpacking the Chisos Mountains | Big Bend National Park | Austin, TX

Backpacking the Chisos Mountains | Big Bend National Park | Austin, TX

Backpacking through Big Bend National Park over Thanksgiving 2019.

Big Bend is unlike anything I have ever experienced. Driving in it gave me a similar impression to Death Vally, but then the Chisos Mountains come into view. The Chisos Mountain Range is totally contained within Big Bend National Park which is very unique. The tallest point (Emory Peak) is at 7,825′ above sea level. The mountains provide incredible views out over the ultra-flat plains that surround them. Thanksgiving is supposedly one of the busiest days of the year at Big Bend, but you wouldn’t know it. I would compare it to a slow day at Mt. Rainier National Park. Texas is not the first state that comes to mind when you think hiking, but this park is worth the trip.

What permit/trail did you guys pick in order to get multiple sites or did you go back to your first site?

  4. Kevin Shirey on September 23, 2022 at 3:18 pm

I did a rafting trip down there 30 years ago as a teen. Best trip of my live. Really want to go back. Pictures do not do it justice for the landscape or the night skies.

Can I get a gear rundown? I’m planning a backpacking trip to big bend late this year, I’ve never been backpacking. Just regular camping.

Wow whatever sound recording you’re using is impressive. Sitting here in my house, I’ve almost smacked myself silly thinking there was a mosquito in my ear.😂

  14. Kelso on September 23, 2022 at 3:34 pm

Did you have to pack all of your water for the trip or were there ways to get water on the trail?

Excellent video. I enjoyed watching and brought up memory. When we did Big bend-Chisos backpacking trip last year, we did in reverse path. East route is lot easier than the brutal Pinnacle hike path to Emory Peak hike trail. You should have climbed to those top of boulder at Emory Peak. it is 1 of 2 best views at Big Bend. But with that wind, I may have aborted. Other camp site and view would be South Rim. Unbelievable view from South Rim and camp site. Worst thing was not taking water filter and not taking advantage of a water hole in the canyon. We only carried 2 gallons of water per person and ended up running out of water for 3 day trip. We got dehydrated after completing Emory Peak. We barely made the descent. St Elena canyon and Lost Maples trails are other excellent places to hike. Nothing like running into mother black bear with 2 cubs in a narrow trail. Got my heart rate really high. lol

  23. Mark Stevens on September 23, 2022 at 3:45 pm

43 years ago I did this solo with much less sophisticated equipment. It was one of the best hikes of my life. Since 1970 I have hiked more than 10 thousand miles across every area of Texas.

I’m planning a 3 day 2 night trip to BB this Jan or Feb. I see one spring showing on/near the loop on a map…are there any other natural water sources, or should I plan on packing in 2 gallons and refilling at the spring?

wtf were you even doing to that coffee? smh…

  39. Patrick Van Deventer on September 23, 2022 at 3:57 pm

Nice video! How heavy were your packs and how much water did you take? Considering a late April early May trip, but amount of water needed to do this loop with some heat may be a lot!

  40. Sheryl'Lyn Rivera on September 23, 2022 at 3:57 pm

That was a nice video. So cool.

I watched the entire vid! BBNP and the entire area of Guadelupe Mts. down thru the Marfa and Alpine areas, and on into Big Bend……..def my favorite places!

I have not hiked from Chisos Basin since 1982, and haven’t even been to the area since Christmas 2000. To say I miss it terribly is a huge understatement!

So, I was brought to near-tears several times, watching your hike……but those tears spilled down my cheeks when you said, "That’s the best thing I ever tasted!" OMG, I actually FELT that!

Thanks so much for documenting and sharing with us! Fantastic filming, editing and music!

  48. Wander Time on September 23, 2022 at 4:08 pm

I’m heading here at the end of the month. Great video! I’m so sad the Chisos are taking fire damage, and I won’t be able to experience them like this. But it’s great to see it here and have an idea of what it was like.

  49. Samir D on September 23, 2022 at 4:08 pm

What time of year did y’all hike it? Great video man
