Beach Camping? DON'T DO THIS! RV Swamped by Water in Texas

#beachcamping
We beach camped recently near Corpus Christi, Texas. It was great for the first week, but then — high tide got us. Our RVs were surrounded by water. I’ll show you what I learned so this NEVER happens again.

Oh boy, salt… sand. Hmmm. Better get that cleaned off.

    Goes with the lunar cycle.

Thanks for the waring. Oh, absolutely love your cat. We camp with our bearded dragon.

I’m from Redondo Beach CA. You can generally tell how far the tide comes up on a monthly cycle based on strands of sea weed laying around or sea shells washed up.

Always know that the tide will go in further and out further as you get closer to a full moon. So on a full moon that whole beach is probably flooded.

I’m so happy you made it out safely! That’s scary. You’re brave 🙌🏼

Love you Robin! Glad you had a great time on the beach! You know, I made the same rookie mistake in 2018. I had my rig less than a month & just had to drive across the USA to see Lone Rock Beach at Lake Powell again. I parked just as you did. Not realizing a big storm was coming in that night. While I slept, a dozen big rv’s moved closer & closer to me, blocking me in! So while they were drunk and passed out, I was trapped with rising water. 🤬 Now you can literally WALK right up to Lone Rock due to the low water levels. What a trip!

lower your tire psi when driving on sand or when diving in the desert at high temperatures. family in the rv and tire business for over 60 years. We also took our rigs for many year to pismo and dirt bikes to the desert. I am a single rv part time travler.

Always check the vegetation line. Anything between the plants and water is fair game.

  9. Zimbab on April 12, 2023 at 7:23 pm

    Quicksand!

  10. Zack DeMundo on April 12, 2023 at 7:23 pm

Sounds like a “Spring” or “King” tide. Extra high due to alignment of moon and sun both tugging either together or in opposition.

Clean the undercarriage of your rig before you leave Corpus. You’ll want to get that salt off.

Do it again – beach camping is great!

  11. Glamper Jan on April 12, 2023 at 7:23 pm

Hi Robin I went there to the same beach In my class C and cars were out there on the hard pack. So I went maybe 20′ and felt it sliding sliding and I said forget this so I turned around and guned and got out but that’s as close as I ever wanna get to sand. I will admire it from afar. There is a campground down the way and it’s on pavement but you’re still right by the water I think I’ll try that next time. See you in the desert!

We went into the Mississippi River up to our knees with my dad 320 pounds . The sand was soft and before we knew it our feet sunk up to our knees and the water was up to our waist . Scary 😨 you don’t need that with your RV.

  19. Barbara Buford on April 12, 2023 at 7:32 pm

All I could think of was, ‘Get Out, and get out now’, until u explained that the sand would help move u into the ocean if u had tried, SCARY!! Me, I can’t swim, and would have NEVER parked that close to the beach. Please Think, ‘Safety First’. So glad u all are ok. ♥️

I’m a new follower & so appreciate all your amazing tips, thank you! I’m planning to live full time now at almost 60. Never have done before. I’m excited! May I ask your opinion as you’ve had different types of RVs. What is the best type for a beginner w towing a car? I was looking at a Winnebago Minnie Winnie, but now thinking maybe starting out with something smaller, maybe a teardrop? I’m so confused lol!!! ♥️♥️

  30. Kathryn B on April 12, 2023 at 7:48 pm

Seen too many rv’s that didn’t realize the tide can get pretty high. Our 5th wheel is too heavy anyway.

Robin, I know you do this "for a living" now and you seem to be having a great time., which is lovely to watch. But I want you to understand the difference you make in people’s lives. You inspire, you make us laugh, you make it all seem "possible". I’m 75 years old and in 6 months will be heading out to live "on the road" and I cannot wait….your channel and all your RVs will guide me every step of the way. Between you and Bob Wells….it is all possible. May the Force Be With You.

No you dont hav room. I knew exactly what you did when you said rooky!!!! 60yrs ago i used to camp on padre and galveston island when there was NOTHING there!!!!!! Tide buried my grandfathers big ole buick tank!!!!!! Took half a day to dig it out. Water inside!!!!!

  38. Traveler_GAL on April 12, 2023 at 7:55 pm

I learned about + tides and – tides. Minus tides are awesome to look at marine life. Rocks have a lot of life going on. Glad all worked out for you.

  39. Debra Meyer on April 12, 2023 at 7:57 pm

I spent 15 years in that area and visited a few months ago. We drove on that lovely hard packed sand but camped at Mustang Island in the paved area. I remember having seen a few pickups buried to the door frames out in the surf. You probably got the effect of a Spring Tide due to the recent full moon, plus it was that Supermoon, a bit closer than usual= more tidal range. What I din not realize before I lived around the coast is that some coasts have one high/low a day and some have TWO. Padre Island has two high and two low tides a day. Glad you got out without paying for a tow.

SOOO RELIEVED that you and your friend got out of there..It happened to my roadtrip buddy and I back in the 1975..WE were on the beach in Galveston TX…I’m from illinois…locals said sure you can drive on the beach…no RV just my Doge Swinger car…We did get stuck when tide came up…luckliy some young guys came by and towed us out of there…never again did I drive my car on the beach!

    Cat is like uhhh.

  42. Greg Hall on April 12, 2023 at 8:00 pm

All nice camping on the beach, but now you need to take your rigs to the self service car wash and climb under the trucks and get all that salt and sand out of everything, especially your wheels and brake drums. Salt water and sand are very corrosive.

  48. Johnny Boyd on April 12, 2023 at 8:07 pm

FYI…. I was born and raised on the coast in Port Lavaca just up the coast from Port A. Here is a tip. In the spring we get what we call Bull Tides and these only occur during the spring. Tides will get 2 ft and as much as 3 ft above normal. Especially in those March and April high wind days and days and days. You have to get back further than normal in Port A and any other place on the Gulf Coast. This also includes Magnolia Beach. You will find yourself in the situation you guys found yourself in. Glad y’all got it without needing a tow truck.

Oh damn. A plus high tide. It happens. Ya, wet sand can suck. Your right a tide table is crucial. Try a minus tide, in a boat camping😂 can be a major shocker, and wait time.
