Welcome back to another Hiking in Colorado 14er adventure! This week’s trip takes us out to the Elk Mountains outside of Aspen. Pyramid Peak is considered to be one of the hardest 14ers in Colorado. The northeast ridge is considered to be the standard route. The hike begins at the Maroon Lake trail head and the Pyramid Peak trail veers off to the left from the main Crater Lake trail. Pyramid is rated as a Class 4 and it is recommended that you have previous class 3/4 experience before considering this mountain. The trail wanders through forests, through the amphitheater, up a 1000′ foot slope to the ridge at 13,000′, across exposed ledges and up a Class 3/4 wall to the summit at 14,018′.
