Fly Fishing in Glacier National Park

Fly Fishing in Glacier National Park

We brought a fly rod along on our family vacation to Glacier National Park and had several opportunities to do some fishing in multiple regions of the park. Not only did we get to experience some of the beautiful scenery of the Rocky Mountains but also caught several fish, including some native west-slope cutthroats! This was a trip I will never forget. Hope you enjoy the video!

New rule: if you feel you MUST hold a fish out of the water for a photo op then YOU HOLD YOUR BREATH TOO. HOLD YOUR BREATH THE WHOLE TIME THE FISH IS OUTA THE WATER!!

Which spots did you fish? I’m going in a week and am incorporating some fly fishing into my hikes.

Hey guys, just wanted to tell you that this is one of my favorite fly fishing videos I’ve ever seen! I’m from Oklahoma but my heart is in N.W. Montana. Been there and loved it! I’m just now trying to learn fly fishing but would love to try it in Glacier National Park. Thank you and keep up the good work!

Even in MT you guys can’t even break 14"!! Absolutely amazing. A real handicap taking away those barbs and the nets huh?! And just because the system is oligotrophic doesn’t mean inverts, especially macros inverts, are limiting to the population size or the size of the trout. Do you even science, bro? Rainbows aren’t even native to the area!! Good video quality, bad video content.

Great video! Very beautiful place! I live in Russia, and your videos help me learn English. Thanks! In my country fly fishing is rarely occurs so it very interesting for me. (Sorry if i wrote somthing wrong)

You need a big gob of worms on a #4, or #6 eagle claw hook. That’s how you get the big trout!

  14. Bill Knox on February 26, 2020 at 12:08 am

Nice video but you need to bend the barbs and try not to handle the fish if you can – will ensure a much higher survival rate

  15. Gerald G on February 26, 2020 at 12:09 am

Beautifully filmed, and very well done overall. What a wonderful experience. The fish at the 18min. mark were gorgeous! I am for eating the rainbow anywhere in cut territory. Only one thought if you don’t mind: Too much false casting will really cut down on your takes.

The best part about this video is I recognize most of the places you’re fly fishing. I live about 20 minutes away and learned to fly fish in the park. I’m glad you enjoyed.

Holding catch and release fish in the centre, out of the water, with one hand damages their nervous system resulting in a mortality rate of 80% within 3 days of release.

  25. sandwich eater on February 26, 2020 at 12:23 am

Do you even fish bro? No net rookie!!! Oh your video needs more adds.

  26. Dane Lobe on February 26, 2020 at 12:24 am

Montana resident for +5o years the best fly fishing in my opinion are Big Mo, Gallatin river, Madison, Big hole and the Yellowstone !! but my favorite getaway is with out a doubt is the Mussleshell. Glacier park is my favorite park in the united states, with the Frank Church river being my second choice with Yellowstone NP. love your guy videos, a little more panoramic views would be appreciated !!!

{Musselshell on fly rod with 3-4 b small mouth is a fisherman’s thrill. I have caught the occasional 5 pound bass, what a fight.
    cutthroats up north are plentiful and big, you got walleye 5 pound browns 12" brook and some rainbows. There is also paddle fish in the lower parts. SSSSSShhhhhh secret }

Is it worth it to bring waders with me? Looks like you did lots of fishing from the side of the rivers. Going there in September with the family. I’m the only one fishing. (Similar situation as you). Trying to minimize the luggage. Great video!

  38. Dawa Phutty Lepcha on February 26, 2020 at 12:41 am

The place truly magical. Nice healthy native trout n da ones u mentioned tiny rainbows its called brook trout..doesn’t get much big.

  39. Glen Oya on February 26, 2020 at 12:42 am

Noticed that you both were catching very little brook trout toward the end of your video. And yes, it’s always great it you can get outside with nature.

  40. PAKLeow on February 26, 2020 at 12:44 am

In the park, can you spin or only fly fishing is permitted?

make sure you guys hit the N. Fork of the Flathead on your next trip. Rent a raft and float that sucker, gorgeous, and tons of fish (not a lot of size but there are some good ones)

  43. tom parker on February 26, 2020 at 12:47 am

What did you say? "you literally can’t touch one" like to remove the hook? its like falling in a cave and the guide says "uh, well you’re really not supposed to touch them"……

    #onemorecast haha awesome video!

  47. jhall2691 on February 26, 2020 at 12:50 am

Leave those little trout alone. Fish for the big ones with a hornberg, muddler, gray squirrel tail, white maribou, jassid, adams, cahills, and maybe even some concoction made from feathers on an old lady’s hat. My cousin once caught a 16 inch, two pound brook trout on some wet fly that he tied on his first cast.

Is this a fishing vid or a talking vid?

  50. Jamppa Peltotalo on February 26, 2020 at 12:54 am

A tenkara rod would have been great. Wind and deep pools not ideal for it though.
