Free Camping in the East Pt.3: New York's Adirondacks

The Cedar River Flow and Moose River Plains Wild Forest areas have roughly 150 free campsites in the heart of the Adirondacks. Definitely one of the best places to get a sense of wilderness in the eastern US.

nothing is free.  The Adirondacks state park website says yes they are free to enter but most of the individual sights may charge a fee.  It my experience they usually do.  Technically they are free if you can walk 20 miles from the nearest town just to get their or pay $50 for a cab to drop you off.

There are some really great places out there to camp and for free once you know where to look and go. Thanks for sharing, adding this to my get away list 🙂

Since you have been doing this for a while, how long does it take you to setup your Casita for arriving and taking off. Do you usually unhitch for exploring in your SUV?

    Thanks,

    Tina

Great video and info. I know your Casita TT is great for accessing small areas.  Was wondering if you ever considered a Truck Camper?  Seems they are perfect for accessing such places. Like the Lance 825 or 865 or the LivinLite 8.5 or 6.8.

Been there many times! Camped with our new truck camper right in that spot you showed on the other side of Wakely dam! You can paddle up the Cedar River near the head of the flow about 2 miles to a beautiful lean-to. Wonderful spot to camp if the bugs are minimal.

I bought my secondhand Casita SD from a couple who lived up there in a place called Malone, NY….beautiful country up there. That’s where those fugitives escapees from that NY State prison were found.  Driving in the Adirondacks can cause a lot of wear and tear on the car brakes – lots of hilly  roads southeast Adirondacks. Spent a day in Lake Placid last summer – enjoyed checking out the 1980 Winter Olympic sites……don’t worry about replying. I never figured out how to unblock……thank for the videos. And be careful out there with grizzlies and other creatures in the woods….as well as kayaking.

How does one camp at these sites for free? I thought NYSDEC charged for their site usage.

Great info. Thank you. I’m always worried about getting lost when I drive. I would be traveling from the Harlem area. Is this area easy enough to get to without stressing out too much?

  21. Anthony N on March 26, 2020 at 1:36 pm

So many beautiful places to camp in ADK you can never see it all. Thanks for the nice videos.

  22. Rosie Duarte on March 26, 2020 at 1:36 pm

Do those have, water and electric hookups or is it more boondocking style?

  23. Jarrold Bates on March 26, 2020 at 1:38 pm

Good stuff Bill. I’ll keep that area in mind for warm weather camping.

Thanks for sharing. Looks like the perfect area to be in during the hot summers.

  27. William Penn jr. on March 26, 2020 at 1:47 pm

Yes free to camp and hike but no access by public transportation and too far to walk from the nearest town, so you can either take a cab or pay the even more expensive parking fees, or park in the any of the secluded lots and risk your car being vandalized.

    Hi Bill,

When I go to the DEC website it wants you to reserve with another website which has fees. I don’t think I was at the exact sites you show however. Are only certain campgrounds free?

  31. Beer Champ BBQ on March 26, 2020 at 1:51 pm

Great info, just found your channel and subbed. I just spent 10 days at Moffitt Beach camp ground and found a really cool free site on Madison Lake. I did a short video on it.

  32. Mitch Kolber on March 26, 2020 at 1:54 pm
