We have camped in New Mexico for over a month now. We planned to breeze through the land of enchantment but quickly learned that there are WAY TOO MANY awesome sights and adventures to be had in this area. Fortunately, this life on the road allows for lots of flexibility and we can stay for essentially as long as we want to explore our surroundings!
We went to our first natural hot springs which was clothing optional and felt like a dream! We kayaked in our inflatable kayak for the first time and sucked at it but had a blast. We hiked through slot canyons and above the unique tent rocks of Kasha Katuwe. Zac tent-camped and shot the milky way in the dark sky of the badlands. New Mexico has been absolutely unreal and is a new favorite travel destination for us!

I’d rather not see videos when the makers are physically in the video. I also don’t like so much talking. Just state where you are from segment to segment. I’d rather see what is being videotaped and hear the natural sounds. I hope this input helps with future videos.

Enjoyed the visit with you. You haven’t even touched the hem of the garment of NM. In a couple of months, I will be moving back for the fourth time (over a period of 40+ years). You will find that NM is like a bungee cord attached to your heart, which will keep pulling you back.

This is absolutely beautiful guys! I would love to do something like this eventually, dumb as it sounds my fear of bugs and wild life is something that holds me back lol. I’m sure I’d get over it but when I see some of those crazy looking beetles and spiders my stomach turns! How did you get used to it?!

You are in my ‘neck of the woods’, now or maybe you were. I suspect you went just days before I got there as I now live in the Smoky Mountains. There was one place I wasn’t sure of just where you were, but otherwise you roamed around various parts of the state. There is a spot in eastern Utah that is so dark and so clear that I had to pull over. And I routinely spent time out nowhere in the Pecos, outside of Farmington and Shiprock and on the mountain over telluride before it became so popular (except for the locals) and none of the places gave me the view of the skies I saw there. There is also a rough campground on the reservation near Canyon de Chelley that is known for their night sky. I don’t know how close (or far) you are now but if you are close and still working on the project, it is certainly worth a drive over. And you will like the rocks in Canyon de Chelley (Can yun d’ Shay). Or if you plan to visit Moab, you will be about an hour from the spot. Probably anywhere outside of the glow of Moab where there is no light will give you that view. Stunning!

Very cool video! Love New Mexico! Lived there two times for a total of nearly ten years and now I’m sixty five and I’m stuck in North Carolina where I’m from and it looks like I’ll never get back out there.
Some of the places you visited look firmiliar. Of course, the radio telescope between Secoro and Datil I know. There was a picnic table across the road from it that I used to stop at and sometimes they were moving the dishes around, which was interesting. Then you visited the UFO museum in Roswell. I found that interesting, too because though I’ve been to Roswell a number of times I recognized the exterior but never went in to the museum but I always wondered what it looked like inside. Now I know. Thank you. The actual "crash sight" is south of Roswell and there was a fee, but it was an honor thing where you dropped a couple of bucks into a box through a slot and you could poke around all day. I never did that either but I did pull off and look from the hiway above. The tent rocks (formations with pointy rocks) were very cool. There are several out there. In the future you might say where you are. Just an idea! Couldn’t tell where those were but I know where a couple of others are. The kayaking sort of looked like Elephant Bute but I wasn’t sure. I also liked the video of the night sky showing the Milky Way with all the falling stars. The time lapse effect was great. The stars were one of my favorite things out there and I really miss gazing at them alot. Thank you for including that.
I didn’t recognize the springs you were in and since you seemed to be mostly in the southern half of the state I supposed them to be the ones down around Truth or Consequences (?) that I’ve been told about. Looked nice. If ever I can get back out there I’ll have to go there and check it out. The ones I’m most firmiliar with are the ones in the Jemez Mountains just south of Los Alamos. There are several. One is San Antonio on San Antonio Creek not far from a beautiful mountain lake called Fenton Lake. That spring has really easy access and is nice but usually crowded and the other is called Spense Hot Springs (my favorite in all of N.M.) and is located on N.M. Rout 4 just north of Battleship Rock if you’re going towards Los Alamos and will be on the right side of the road about a quarter of a mile above the pull off on the side of Cat Mesa. It’s in a heavily forested area and has three descending pools, the top one being a constant 101° where the hot water comes in and the other two being cooler successively. They have sandy bottoms and have rocks to sit on at just the right hight so that only your head sticks out as you soak. Spense, in my opinion is the premiere hot spring in all the south west. It’s especially nice in the winter when the snow is in the mountains. The town of Jemez Springs is a great place to visit and there are probably a dozen good springs there, too but you’ll have to rent a room or pay a fee to soak in the village because they all belong to bed and breakfasts and other businesses.
There is one more interesting hot spring that bares mention and that’s called Sulphur Springs which is at the top of Sulphur Creek Road near the intersection of N.M Route 4 and N.M. 126 near the little town of La Quava (The Cave in Spanish) though it’s now on Forrest Service land. I lived on that property in the 90’s when it was privately owned by a fellow named John Corbin. Now it’s on what’s known as the Villa Caldera which used to be a cattle ranch called the Bacca Location #1. Al Capone soaked there regularly and used that spring in an effort to cure his syphilis in the 40’s. Of course, we know that didn’t work out. In any event, if you go there the spring is on the side of a hill in a volcanic vent on a level area above Sulphur Creek and it’s in a wooden box in the ground. After you soak you’ll have to plunge in the creek in order to wash off the sulphur mud. It’s very invigorating. It’s said to have great health bennifits. Before going up there you should probably check with the folks at the Ranger Station in the village to make sure it’s okay and to get detailed directions.
If you make it back to New Mexico you should check out the Jemez. It’s astoundingly beautiful and the people there are awesome. Route 4 was designated a national scenic by way in the 90’s and though New Mexico is amazing, the Jemez is probably the most incredible part of the state. If you get out that way make a video for me. As always, loved the video. The Badlands remind me of Fantasy Canyon near Vernal, Utah. It is an incredible place and not well known. Next time you are in eastern Utah, you should definitely check it out. It is a mystical place.
