How To Get Your Captain's License To Become A Fishing Guide

The Charter Fishing Business Kit → https://bit.ly/3bS7pLC

If you are considering a career on the water, you will need your Captain’s License to take paying passengers. Whether fishing trips, eco tours or cruises – a Captain’s License is required in order to operate vessels of all sizes.

In this video, Captain Tim and I break down what you’ll need in order to meet the guidelines of the United States Coast Guard as a 6 Pack (OUPV) Certified Captain. This will allow you to take 6 paying passengers on your boat.

I wish everyone a very prosperous venture and please consider subscribing to the channel. I really appreciate it!

Tight Lines,
Captain Mike

Insurance question…I can see how having a Capt. License would lower private boat insurance, but wouldn’t being a "Business" by taking paying clients aboard increase risk and liability in turn increasing Insurance liability? Car insurance goes up if you use your vehicle as a business, is it the same for boats?

  6. Custom LED and FiberOptics Inc on May 13, 2020 at 4:14 pm

A while back we spoke of doing some LED lighting. How about a video of and LED lighting install. LEDs provided by Custom LED along with a role in the install? If you’re interested.

Is there an official book where you need to document your days at sea before applying for the license?

Nice video. To everyone, be sure to have the correct and latest USCG forms. DO NOT overlook anything that is supposed to be checked, initialed or signed. I had the entire packed returned once because there was one small place the doctor did not initial. Had to get that done, submit again and wait.
Here is a thread discussing captain’s license where this video was posted.

I did mine 2 years ago, well explained, good job guys!
You also have to renew every 5 years, but don’t wait last minute if you don’t want to do it all over again. Keep your time in the water, you also will be able to upgrade to 100 tons Master.

  19. Captain Mike Henderson on May 13, 2020 at 4:34 pm

Just submitted my application a week ago. I’ll have Inland Master up to 100 tons, OUPV Near Costal, Auxiliary Sail Endorsement, Commercial Towing Endorsement, and FCC Marine Radio Operator. I live in the Pacific Northwest. Should get the license in the mail in about a month.

  22. Osberto Rodriguez on May 13, 2020 at 4:35 pm

Great video! I’ve been putting off boating & fishing for other priorities all my life but looking to get on the water in my 1st boat by next year. I have watched many of your videos and can’t get enough of them! This one had me take different things into account thanks for sharing… yes I will pursue at least the OUPV grade!

  23. James Doolin on May 13, 2020 at 4:36 pm

Can you recall how many people were in your captain’s class? How many passed and how many failed?
I hear the passing rate is less than 50%. Is that true?

  24. Matthew_Aviation on May 13, 2020 at 4:36 pm

  26. Jim O'Callaghan on May 13, 2020 at 4:37 pm

Exceptional information and…What the…?? At 2:06, did I see that right?? That’s $4.58/gal?? I know that fuel is expensive, but…WOW!! And I’m sure that elsewhere in the country, boaters may pay even more!! Thank God for trailerable boats and a local gas station that has E0 gasoline!! Oh, did I mention Mike that this is some exceptional information… 🙂

Can you recommend a chart plotting tutor before i take the class

  38. Adventures with Frodo on May 13, 2020 at 4:51 pm

I really hope you are learning how to pass the test in Sea School. You should learn how to handle a boat. Not sure how it the self study and passing the test goes. If you had to go to a cassromm then there would be no self study option.

  39. Bradley Turner on May 13, 2020 at 4:52 pm

I’m currently in the navy. I’m born and raised in Florida. been fishing and driving boats my whole life but I would really appreciate any additional information to go about being a boat captain.

  40. Jamie Ford on May 13, 2020 at 4:55 pm

How many people have the time on the water mandate or even would it even be feasible to obtain time on the water, very very few .And the very few that do, is a bank going to give them a loan for a boat as a startup venture , even fewer

  41. Kolin Boorom on May 13, 2020 at 4:56 pm

I’m a recreational fisherman, but if I get my captains license can I write off boating related expenses on, and count the money friends give me for gas and stuff as “revenue”

  42. smokster0604 on May 13, 2020 at 4:56 pm

  45. Legalize Miami on May 13, 2020 at 4:57 pm

Where could i go for sea school? I live in miami florida. What other boating licenses should I get/are avaliable to get and do they apply internationally kind of like how airplane piloting works. //// Also random question that i have not found a response for is how does a person become a captain of a Cruise line boat, what do they need to do? ***Thanks for making this video it actualy helped***

  46. gw wile on May 13, 2020 at 4:59 pm

Captain Mike… You have impressed me with every video that you’ve shared. To you and your’s in this New Year… may you enjoy vigorous health and prosperity! Thank you… gw

  47. skullhart on May 13, 2020 at 4:59 pm

It’s also a FACT that if you hold a Captains license the USCG will look at you 10x harder in an accident vs an unlicensed boater…be careful. The free boaters safety courses offered through Boat US is what most of the boaters in Miami DESPERATELY need. Ignorant AF.

Geez, the whole offshore time is going to difficult to do. I don’t get many opportunities to run out there in a flats boat.
