July 9, 2020 Long Island Fishing Report and Forecast

Fluke fishing has heated up with the weather in the Island’s South Shore bays. Lots of good
reports coming from Jamaica Bay, the West End Bays, Great South, Moriches and Shinnecock
bays. Best action has been on incoming tides with bucktails tipped with Gulp or FishBites, or
spearing and squid combos both taking their share of fish.
Striper fishing on the East End remains strong, with many big bass to 40 and even 50 pounds
coming from Montauk’s rips, along with lots of schoolies and a fair number of slot fish. Trolling,
live baits, diamond jigs and bucktails have all been effective. Tuesday saw very good mixed bag
catches of bass, blues, big porgies and sea bass for bucktailers and diamond jiggers.
On Friday, Fisherman staffers Mike Caruso and Fred Golofaro teamed up with Capt. Savio
Mizzi to place a SAT tag in a 46-ich striper in Montauk as part of the ongoing Northeast Striped
Bass Study. The tag will reveal the fish’s movements over the next four months and help
provide valuable data on the behavior and movement of these fish. This was the third bass
tagged this season. You can watch the tagging process at thefisherman.com and YouTube.
Elsewhere around the Island, lots of porgies in Long Island Sound from boats and shore, and
South Shore reefs are alive with sea bass and porgies. Blowfish, kingfish and triggerfish are
adding to mixed bag catches in the bays. Blowfish and fluke are on the docks, the first small
snappers have arrived, and crabbing gets better every day.

Sounds good, and certainly looking productive, next week after the storm, fishing should be great, …. fingers crossed, so many target species to chose from,… The only problem.

Can someone explain what Fred Golofaro means when he says “the rips at Montauk “ or “the Southside”?
