VIDEO & BLOG: Tips to Visit Ennis Bluebonnets
By: Sarah Crilley, Senior Contributor Collin County Moms
Explore the Official Bluebonnet City of Ennis, Texas which features the famous bluebonnet trail with over 40 miles of mapped driving bluebonnet trails. Bluebonnets are in peak
season the entire month of April, giving you many options to travel the bluebonnet trails.
The Bluebonnet Trails have three marked trails: West Trail, South Trail and North Trail. Let’s break the tour down trail by trail:
West Trail has the most parks and my preference for photo opportunities!
The North Trail has pastures with bluebonnet fields, you may even spot some horses and cattle. There is also a family-owned winery, Sugar Ridge Winery. They offer tours and tastings of their winery.
The South Trail is made up of mostly scenic rural driving and is a fantastic look of Texas at it’s finest!
Mom Tip: Stop by the Ennis visitor center to pickup a map, watch a video on best viewing areas for the day. There are clean bathrooms!
West Trail has Parks to visit: Parks listed on the visitors map to checkout for photo opportunities and restrooms or porta-a-pottys.
#1 Top Bluebonnet Family Location: Meadow View Nature Area on Bardwell Lake: 1901 Laneview. Noted as a seasonal park for April open to car traffic April 1-30 from 8AM-8PM, This was our favorite location with plenty of space, beautiful bluebonnets and Indian paintbrush blooms, and truly is the perfect location for family pictures, exploring, picnics, painting and even kite flying if it’s windy enough! There are picnic tables, a gorgeous view of the lake, and so much open space to explore and relax. We saw many professional photographers out taking pictures at this location. The wide open space made it easy to find uninhibited views for photos. There were fairly clean porta-a-pottys at the time of our trip.
Bluebonnet Park 201 S. Hwy 287, 47-acre park, great for the kids with a playground area, covered pavilion, noted as a must-see for spring bluebonnets with restroom facilities, 3/4 mile walking path, smaller lake view.
Ennis Veterans Memorial Park 2301 Ennis Parkway, 19-acre park with a tribute to local war veterans honoring those who fought and served our country. This is an athletic complex with paved 1/4 mile walking path through wooded areas, restroom facilities, picnic tables and a playground for more information visit Veterans Park website
Kachina Prairie 1816 W. Baldridge St. noted as an Ennis treasure of 30 acres of ‘never plowed’ nature prairie.
Bluebonnet Trail Festival: Mid April, visit the Bluebonnet Trails festival (For April 16-18, 2021) for live music, pop up shops, and crafts. Admission is $5.00 for adults and purchased at the gate. For more information and daily schedule visit https://www.bluebonnettrail.org
Historical Downtown: You will adore the city of Ennis for it’s historical charm. I grew up in Ennis and it is fun to walk down memory lane with my son and point out little areas I enjoyed and now have the opportunity to share with him!

Remember:
-Don’t pull over to take photos, this can be dangerous with oncoming cars and blind spots. Take photos at the designated parks where there are the picture perfect opportunity for your precious photos, and do not trespass on private property.
-Check for dangerous critters! Snakes and other animals can lurk in dense bluebonnets which provides shelter. Beware of bugs and fire ants.
-Wear close toe shoes and bring a blanket to sit in the bluebonnets for your photos.
-Bluebonnets are the State Flower of Texas. Please don’t step on them!
-Don’t litter! Make sure to clean up after your picnic.
-Stop at Buc-ees Ennis Gas Station and Travel Center: 1181 Creechville Rd Ennis TX 75119 Forget something at home? Or want Bluebonnet Souvenirs? Perfect for snacks or a pulled pork bbq sandwhich lunch, souvenir bluebonnet swag, gifts, and a fun travel experience for the whole family.
-Best time for photos always depends but I shoot for the morning light, or a day with overcast weather and of course the golden hour 6pm onward to keep the bright sunshine out of your eyes for those treasured pictures glowing pictures. However, don’t stress! Gathering family members for a bluebonnet adventure is worth memories to last a lifetime.
