Wild Boar Hunting: Essential Equipment

Wild Boar Hunting: Essential Equipment

Ahead of their epic road trip, Ian Harford and Steve Wild share their essential equipment for wild boar hunting in Hungary.

Welcome to Wild Boar Road Trip – Hungary on Team Wild TV.

On the last episode of Wild Boar Road Trip – Hungary, Ian and Steve were in Wales for some driven shooting practice with Andrew Venables of WMS Firearms Training. (Please click here to watch now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWT1dyPLYSw) Today, they’ll walk us through all the gear that will be making the long trip to the Hungarian wilderness. They will also talk about some of the stops they’ll make along the way.

Most of the equipment that Ian and Steve will be taking has been tried and tested on the mountains of Alaska. The key element for their new adventure is keeping dry, comfortable and warm. They will be facing some challenging weather conditions in Hungary, including cold temperatures of up to minus 9 degrees. Making sure their clothing is appropriate for the environment is critical.

After going over the clothing, it’s time to move onto the shooting equipment. Steve will be using the Blaser R8 Professional Success in 300 Win Mag with a Hawke Frontier 1-6 x 24. Ian will be taking his Sauer 404 in 338 Win Mag topped with the Hawke Endurance 1-4 x 24. Along with these two rifles, they will also be taking the Howa 1500 in 308 with a GRS Berserk stock and Hawke Reflex Red-dot Sight.

Ending their essential equipment musts for wild boar hunting in Hungary, Ian and Steve go over all the extra items they will be taking, including: ammunition, shooting sticks, binoculars, rifle clean kits and more. Every item has been carefully considered and has a role to play throughout their epic hunting trip.

With all the equipment packed up and ready to go, it’s time to hit the road for what will be an epic trip that covers 1000’s of miles across Europe. The first stop will be a visit to Jachthuis Vandromme Gun shop in Belgium to get an idea to what other Europe hunters use when going on a wild boar hunting adventure.

Good series. Im just about to buy a third Howa 1500, this time in 6.5 Creedmore. I currently have one in 7mm REM Mag that is so accurate with Hornady Precision Hunter loads that it almost makes buying any other hunting rifle a bit pointless when you take the cost into consideration. $600 NZ Dollar second hand Howa 1500 shoots better than I will ever need it too and in NZ at the moment you can almost buy 3 new Howa’s for the price of one Tikka or Sauer.

Ian and Steve, good luck.  Quick question on your footgear. Since your boots are un-insulated, how much larger, than your normal size, do you get them and what is your summer sock(s)?  Looking forward to the next episodes.  Waidmannsheil!
