Rafa Ortiz, the kayaker known for seeking the gnarliest whitewater, visits Washington D.C. to paddle Great Falls, Class V rapids only 14 miles upstream from the U.S. Capital. Upon his arrival, he is greeted by two local legends, Jason Beakes who has won the Great Falls Race six times and Tom McEwan, one of the first to paddle this section of the Potomac River in 1975. The trio come together to highlight the beauty of one the only kayaking meccas near a large metropolitan area and encourage others to do the same.

Great falls is not in dc lol. It’s just outside of DC. great falls is the border of Maryland and Virginia. If u keep going down the river for like 5 miles you will end up in dc

Tom McEwan is a beast on the river! He has been all over the world in a kayak and been instrumental in getting countless people in kayaks!! Way to go Tom!

Thanks for the click-bait video title Redbull… Great Falls is incredibly dangerous and has claimed the lives of tourists and kayakers alike.

The whitewater kayaking scene around D.C. is great. There are plenty of rapids downstream of great falls that are more suited for beginner and intermediate paddlers. I highly recommend looking into those areas if you’re thinking about trying kayaking around D.C.
