Today we’re talking about free camping! In fact, we’ll be talking about 20 free camping sites you’ll freakin’ love. We loved each and every one of these sites and want to share them with you.

Free camping AKA boondocking is almost always an off-the-grid experience. This means you’ll have to come prepared with your own water, power and waste management plan.

We’re Kyle & Olivia, a young couple traveling the country full time in our 16ft vintage camper. We hit the road in September of 2015 with the goal to live a minimal lifestyle and connect with the world around us. We want to share our experiences as we learn and grow, to hopefully help others who dream of life out on the open road. Join us as we discover the joys and obstacles of nomadic life!

If you are up for no electricity, try Five Springs campground upper level in Lovell, WY. Has amazing views and you are so near the Medicine Wheel national monument. Campground limited to Max 20′ campers. Overnights are $7 per night, outhouses available. No winter trips, roads closed!

There are alot of free camps in Wisconsins’ National forest. You have to bring in water and make a loo, take out what you bring in, leave no trace. I have camped there, for free, most of my life.

  5. ucla89 on November 1, 2019 at 3:51 pm

Alabama Hills, outside of Lone Pine, CA, didn’t make the list? The view of the Sierras alone is worth the trip, but there are also rock formations that rival Joshua Tree NP to climb and hike, and trout fishing nearby. Any size rig can get in.

  6. CE L on November 1, 2019 at 3:52 pm

Great list. Thanks. I live near the northern terminus of the Natchez Trace Pkwy and want to drive the full length. Now I know I have a place to stay when I get to the southern end.

  20. Sue Freivald on November 1, 2019 at 4:10 pm

new to RVing and on a tight budget – 17′ camper. Found #8 in the National Forest south of the Marina on Flaming Gorge in Wyoming – miles and miles of decent road with awesome lakeside camping. Also, in Utah in the Uinta-Wasatch mts off 150 (scenic highway), great boondocking between the numerous campgrounds on a lovely meadow–south of the forest ranger and south of Christmas Meadow. Camping after labor day we had both areas almost to ourselves – did need to watch the weather moving in. The roads at Flaming Gorge could be a bit greasy after a heavy rain :~).

  21. bizim eller on November 1, 2019 at 4:12 pm

  25. Tim Green on November 1, 2019 at 4:18 pm

The Gimbal worked great, very steady! I actually liked all the sites but I think we are going to go for a super C (if you would like to see one look at the IWS site) about the weight of a class A but like a 18wheeler really extended cad!

  26. Ryan Mclaughlin on November 1, 2019 at 4:18 pm

Cool thank you Gimbal was just fine perfect

  27. smilinglarge on November 1, 2019 at 4:19 pm

What kind of dog is River? I think I want one like that.

  28. Travel Small Live Big on November 1, 2019 at 4:20 pm

Impressive list! We camped in the National Forest North of Flagstaff – fantastic area! One of the reasons we have a smaller trailer is to open up our possibilities and not limit us. Magnolia Beach looks really nice. I think one of our favorite free places is The Alabama Hills along California’s Highway 395 / BLM land – fantastic views, hiking & lots to do.

  29. MrStr81 on November 1, 2019 at 4:21 pm

Great info, thanks. We just purchased a motorhome and will be starting our adventures this winter. Some great ideas for us.

    Thank you!

  31. Desiree Hann on November 1, 2019 at 4:23 pm

Mine is not on your list. I’m not much into walking around w/o something to keep my attention span. IDAHO! MONTANA! have gold panning spots, crystal, sapphire & cool rock digging. Libby Mt. Gold Panning Recr. Area. Kingston Id. Couer d Alene River, Bumble Bee Campground, & Steam Boat FS 400, you can pull in to camp spots all up & down the river. Some spots charge, but majority are free, that are right next to the river & spots all along the creeks that flow into it. Map it on Google. Fishing, River Rafting, Crystal & Gold Panning/digging. The Snake pit BBQ & Lounge Great Food & only 3 miles to Pinehurst. The another 4 towns right on Interstate 90, are within 5-12 miles, with many historical sites, Wallace Id. is famous along with Biggest under ground Silver mine in U.S. Then 26 min. west is the Famous CDA Resort on CDA Lake a wonder in its self. Must check these places out. Emerald Creek South of CDA worlds only Star Garnet digging spot, but have to pay like 10.00. The scenery beats all in seen in the video. This link is just 1 place there is over a 100 more private single spots to just pull into, right off the main paves rd. Or around 5 more like Bumble Bee. Places all over, (no limit on days,) (you can stay all summer.) in North Idaho & Western Mont, just have to Google it. http://www.americanll.com/americanll-campground-blog/2015/3/30/bumblebee-campground-near-kingston-idaho-virtual-tour (PHOTOS)

Terrific commentary on your choices!! We stay hot on SoCal through late into Oct (91 today inland). Nice mornings and nights, but it’s one of the hotter months in SoCal. How are your girls (River included)?

    Nice video
    Is that camper a Scamp?

  47. Jefferson Raymond on November 1, 2019 at 4:38 pm

The gimbal’s good! I think walking heads are a vast improvement over static talking heads. What kind did y’all get? I bought a Moza Air that I’ve yet to use. Not exactly a plug-&-play type of device in general.

  48. David C. on November 1, 2019 at 4:43 pm
