Camping on the Beach at Padre Island National Seashore

Camping on the Beach at Padre Island National Seashore

We wanted to do something completely different and adventurous for spring break this year and take the kids camping on the beach at Padre Island National Seashore. Things didn’t quite go as planned.

Go back to California!! Texas is not for soy boys

  2. Gary B on February 4, 2023 at 12:57 pm

The Instant I saw Title, I knew the culprit, lol.
Big & Little Shell Beach, back in 60 & 70s ( before PINS) was our general destination for fishing.
Only die hards did trip, lol particularly back then.
Ooh, nice little Waco kicker at end.

  3. ClaiohmSolais on February 4, 2023 at 12:58 pm

I always go as far as possible to be alone on the beach. What a magical experience it is

  4. BringTheBeaver on February 4, 2023 at 12:58 pm

Too much sand? And wind? Hahahaha

You sir, should NOT ever go beach camping…. I wanted to watch this to the end, but how pathetic can it get…. Seriously….

All these prissy, campers…. Oh, and get the F outta here with the pink hair. 😂😂😂

  5. Jeffrey Carter on February 4, 2023 at 1:01 pm

nice to get your take on PINS, good average person slant. Question: you never did specifically say, but I am guessing you started out on the beach, too windy to camp, shifted over to Bird Basin campground on the lagoon, then found a spot at Malachite Campground which is near the beach, but a little bit sheltered by the dunes? did I guess right? any one else? Thanks, hope to go in March for a week or so

After 25 some years of visiting Padre Island National Seashore last year I finally got it right. Spent a four-day long weekend down there. Day trip to the beach till dark then drive back to hotel room. It’s the only way to go. Sand free every night with clean sheets.

  7. M. Green on February 4, 2023 at 1:03 pm

Wow! Did you put your finger in a light socket?

  8. richard montgomery on February 4, 2023 at 1:05 pm

This is where I live it’s the only place we have to go “adventuring” unfortunately. How far did you drive to come to this beach I didn’t think anyone would wanna come here

  9. cross7707 on February 4, 2023 at 1:06 pm

Where can I buy that trailer?

  10. TexArkansan on February 4, 2023 at 1:08 pm

I do a 4 day trip there every year with friends. I’ll be there next month

  11. Darryl Harris on February 4, 2023 at 1:10 pm

Not a true camper until you camp in a tent on Mustang Island. Sleep with sand in your bed. Eat with sand in your food.

  12. DFWOverland on February 4, 2023 at 1:11 pm

Hi Matt. What is the make if the wind break you have around your jet boil ?

  13. Simon on February 4, 2023 at 1:13 pm

Too much sand at the beach. Check!

  14. Tundra Outlander on February 4, 2023 at 1:13 pm

You think the wind was bad, try far west Texas in March. March and April are the windiest in Texas.

  15. T on February 4, 2023 at 1:14 pm

    Camp at mile marker 25….haunted……

  16. Ship Time on February 4, 2023 at 1:15 pm

Padre is always windy which has pluses and minuses. Worry more about the rattlers.

  17. Kittenx kore on February 4, 2023 at 1:15 pm

What’s the name of that campground. ? Thanks and great video

  18. Armor Vestrus on February 4, 2023 at 1:17 pm

Here is a clue, they call it ( Sea Level ) for a very good reason. One day I went searching for ( Sea Curvature ) and I never did find it and no one else ever has, very strange. As I recall it is (8 inches per miles squared). 🌎?

  19. DaViper Venom on February 4, 2023 at 1:20 pm

Texas gulf coast is one of the best places in the U.S. for flying kites, wind surfing and kite surfing because of the strong winds. But as someone indicated on the comments the winds happen in early spring and winter months. Otherwise it’s fairly calm.

  20. DFWOverland on February 4, 2023 at 1:20 pm

Btw. Wife and I love the tattoo on your left bicep.

  21. Jeffrey Carter on February 4, 2023 at 1:21 pm

sorry, that should be "Malaquite" Campground, not Malachite

  22. AcE 316 on February 4, 2023 at 1:22 pm

    This was cringy af

  23. Phil B on February 4, 2023 at 1:22 pm

Too much wind, too much sand, the waters cold…maybe the hot tub at Holiday Inn would be a better fit.

  24. Marni Noback on February 4, 2023 at 1:23 pm

Love the shower setup! I’m curious what you do with the water runoff? I’m thinking you would end up standing in mud? Thanks!

  25. This Mom Is Outside on February 4, 2023 at 1:26 pm

the wind is always ridiculous out there 🙂 we made steaks one time and tried to hide behind the vehicle but it still made a sand seasoned dinner 🤗

  26. Nano Bytes on February 4, 2023 at 1:27 pm

I’ve been camping at P.I.N.S. for 50 years. There are a ton of tricks to be comfortable and safe. The biggest trick is (believe it or not) Baby Powder. The salt and sand wipe right off…. Of course vehicle, camp and fire placement go a long way too.

  27. Jeff Behringer on February 4, 2023 at 1:27 pm

Great vid. You can also hit Yarborough pass at the 15 mile mark. It’s bayside and you can wade right out in the water. Has a camping area.

  28. misc4jb on February 4, 2023 at 1:28 pm

I’ll be there next month, been a couple of times in the past. The thing about the wind is, sure you want less of it, but you don’t ever want it to completely go away. Because when that does happen, the mosquitoes come out in full force. I got bit well over 100 times last trip when the wind stopped.

  29. mb on February 4, 2023 at 1:30 pm

Lol all the cool hill gear but that PINS will humble you. Béen camping and fish the beach since the 90s. First rule dont take anything on the beach you really care about, it will never be the same.

  30. Hlo Bend on February 4, 2023 at 1:32 pm

Surf fishing, I suppose, this applys to beach camping also, not to many people can muscle up to it.

  31. Wade Lewis on February 4, 2023 at 1:32 pm

    Thanks for sharing

  32. Shawn Tallman on February 4, 2023 at 1:33 pm

You live in Waco? If so..so do I. I have a 2006 Nissan Xterra that I’m slowly getting equipped for overlanding.

  33. robert stout on February 4, 2023 at 1:37 pm

Corpus Christi area is the 10th windiest city in the US,you appreciate it in the summer.Water warms up by end of April.

  34. Kari Miller on February 4, 2023 at 1:40 pm

What campsite did you choose instead of beach?

  35. Ramon De Leon on February 4, 2023 at 1:40 pm

Mix the cilantro with your picante sauce; then it’ll stay put. On the beach some people block the wind from their tents with thier vehicles, it helps some times.

  36. That Bearded Guy on February 4, 2023 at 1:40 pm

We were there in april in the 4runner. Had a blast and got married on the beach

  37. me some more on February 4, 2023 at 1:41 pm

I camp on the beach A LOT… I do not use tents. I use the back of my truck. It has a topper on it. Wind, rain or both I’m protected and sleep quite well.

  38. me some more on February 4, 2023 at 1:41 pm

I am a native Texan. By far my favorite get away in Texas.

  39. bikerbrego on February 4, 2023 at 1:41 pm

That’s my backyard. I camp anywhere from 45 to 55 mile marker. The wind can be bad at times. Definitely do not set camp near the water

  40. me some more on February 4, 2023 at 1:43 pm

Turn off the crappy background noise.

  41. usscott on February 4, 2023 at 1:44 pm

Dude, you are way too old to wear that hair style

  42. John Smith on February 4, 2023 at 1:46 pm

Note to self, go to padre in june.

  43. Bob Harnisch on February 4, 2023 at 1:47 pm

Great Video. You brought to mind some things to think about before camping on the beach. Which campground did you move to after leaving the windy beach?

  44. David Martinez on February 4, 2023 at 1:47 pm

    Thats a small buckeyes

  45. John Donovan on February 4, 2023 at 1:48 pm

On the other side of the island is the Laguna Madre, a relatively shallow hyper saline bay stretching south from CC into Mexico. Some of the best redfish speck’ and flounder fishing on the planet. Not many oysters though, there are no freshwater sources dumping into the Laguna and the only dilution on the US side comes at CC, port Mansfield and Port Isabel. Heading down there in late May for a Kayak camping/fishing marathon from CC to Port Isabel and back.

  46. Dawn2Dusk Adventuring on February 4, 2023 at 1:49 pm

I’m laughing so hard because I know your pain. When I adventure I’m roughing it. But when my family and friends go with me. They want to eat out and we would have headed to the camping grounds too. Even though we brought everything to survive in the wild. Happy wife happy life.

  47. Jason on February 4, 2023 at 1:52 pm

Complaining about the wind at any coast is equivalent to complaining that water is wet.

  48. John Riddle on February 4, 2023 at 1:53 pm

Let me first say I must salute you for being “fluid” and going back to the campground! Some people are too rigid and must stick to the plan even at the cost of other peoples pleasure. Once again hats off

  49. Bret Branon on February 4, 2023 at 1:53 pm

I was with you until you stood on the dunes. Bad tourist is bad. There’s only one Rule down there, and you broke it.

  50. Mikey Garcie on February 4, 2023 at 1:56 pm

Name and location of the campground y’all used here?
